The Landrake Land Sale of 1918

On Tuesday, 17 th September 1918, some 843 acres of land in the Parish of Landrake and St.Erney, belonging to the Rt.Hon. the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe were offered for sale by auction. This auction was held at the Royal Hotel in Plymouth.

There were seven farms for sale - Poldrissick, Trewint, Mera Park, Pound, The Barton, Trebeighan and Lower Brightor, together with numerous Lots of accommodation land, houses, cottages and quarries.

The Barton Farm was described as forming one of the best farms in the County, comprising an exceptionally good farm-dwelling house, suitable for a gentleman’s residence.

The Barton Farm included the quarry from which stone was taken to build Landrake Parish Church, together with other churches in the area. There was also a small portion of land down West Lane which was ‘occupied by the Landrake Parish Council as a Refuse Tip, at a rent of 10/- per annum.’ Over the years many interesting artefacts, especially the old glass medicine bottles, have been found at this Tip. Yesterday’s rubbish is the collector’s treasure of today.

Poldrissick Farm had the added advantage of a frontage to the River Lynher. Among the many buildings at the farm was ‘a Corn Mill with one pair stones and overshot water wheel which provides valuable power for working machinery. There was also a Cider Mill and Press and fitted with a granite trough.’
